PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins called up rookie defenceman Alex Goligoski on Saturday from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
The move comes after an injury to veteran Sergei Gonchar. The star defenceman left Friday night's 5-3 playoff win over Washington after a sustaining knee-to-knee hit from Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.
Gonchar was assisted off the ice, unable to put any weight on his right leg.
Gonchar missed a lot of the regular season with a shoulder injury that occurred during the pre-season. The Penguins didn't begin their late-season surge that carried them into the playoffs until Gonchar returned.
Goligoski has registered 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 45 contests this season with Pittsburgh.
