RALEIGH, N.C. (CP) - Veteran Hurricanes defenceman Glen Wesley is returning to Carolina for another season.

Wesley has agreed to a US$1.4-million, one-year deal with the Hurricanes that will see him return for his 12th season with the franchise and 19th overall.

"Glen had an outstanding season last year, and continues to be a steadying force on our blue-line," Hurricanes president and GM Jim Rutherford said in a release Friday. "His leadership is important to the fabric of our dressing room and we are glad he is returning to play another season."

Wesley, 38, had a goal and 12 assists in 68 games for Carolina last season. He was first on the team with a plus-11 rating and second with 103 blocked shots.

The six-foot-one, 205-pounder has 127 goals and 402 assists in 1,379 career NHL games with Toronto, Boston and Carolina. He has 52 points (15-37) in 169 career playoff games, and he won a Stanley Cup last year with the Hurricanes.

Wesley was originally a first-round pick (third overall) by the Bruins in the 1987 draft.
