Defenceman Cowen leads Spokane to 4-1 victory over Thunderbirds @NHLdotcom

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane captain Jared Cowen scored early in the second period and added an assist the Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 on Saturday night in the Western Hockey League.

Cowen, selected ninth overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2009 NHL entry draft, saw his 2008-09 season shortened by a knee injury. This season, the towering 6'5" defenceman has six points through five games after returning from Senators training camp.

Blake Gal also had a goal and an assist for Spokane (4-2-1), while Tyler Johnson and Kyle Beach added goals.

Colin Jacobs replied for the Thunderbirds (2-5-0).

James Reid made 23 saves for the Chiefs, while Seattle netminder Jacob De Serres stopped 28 shots.
