Darcy Kuemper makes 27 saves as Red Deer shocks Saskatoon 3-0

Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves to earn the shutout as the Red Deer Rebels went into Saskatoon and shocked the Blades 3-0 in Western Hockey League action Saturday night.

Saskatoon (23-9-2-0), the first place team in the East Division, went into the game with 21 more wins and 19 more points than the Rebels (13-18-0-5), last in the Central Division.

But, Steve Oursov opened the scoring or Red Deer with his third goal of the season, a power play marker 15:59 into the first period.

Willie Coetzee's 10th of the year doubled the Rebels' lead 2:26 into the second before Cass Mappin got an insurance goal with another power play goal 1:39 before the second intermission.

However, Kuemper didn't need the extra help as he turned away 12 shots in the third period to make Oursov's goal stand up as the winner.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Brandon 5 Prince Albert 4 (OT), Calgary 3 Chilliwack 1, Moose Jaw 7 Kootenay 4, Medicine Hat 5 Portland 3, Everett 4 Prince George 2, Vancouver 3 Tri-City 1, Seattle 3 Spokane 1 and Swift Current 2 Kamloops 0.

At Saskatoon, Braden Holtby saved 26 shots for the Blades.

At Brandon, Man., Jay Fehr scored 1:39 into overtime to lift Brandon (19-13-1-1) to the victory over Prince Albert (14-21-2-0).
