Kravtsov could play for Rangers this season

Forward prospect has size, ability to make jump from Russia

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- For an idea of what the New York Rangers think forward Vitali Kravtsov will eventually do for them, watch Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom's circle-to-circle saucer pass to Alex Ovechkin in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Backstrom's pass from the right face-off circle went through the slot, below the hash marks, between two Vegas Golden Knights' sticks and onto Ovechkin's stick for a one-timer in the Capitals' championship-clinching game.

Thornton signs one-year contract with Sharks

39-year-old center recovering from knee injury

Joe Thornton signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

It is the second straight year Thornton, who turned 39 on Monday, signed a one-year contract to stay in San Jose.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Blues boost center depth with O'Reilly, Bozak

Improvement down middle raises expectations for deep playoff run

The St. Louis Blues drastically revamped and improved their center depth with two transactions Sunday, enough to put the "Stanley Cup contenders" tag back on them after they missed the playoffs last season.

The Blues signed Tyler Bozak to a three-year, $15 million contract and acquired Ryan O'Reilly in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for forwards Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka and Tage Thompson, their first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and their second-round pick in 2021.

John Tavares leaving the New York Islanders to sign a seven-year, $77 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs was without question the biggest news of the first day of NHL free agency this offseason. It clearly impacts the Maple Leafs, but the ripple effects of his decision spread far and wide in the NHL.
