NEW YORK - Suspended Sean Avery met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for about three hours at a disciplinary hearing Thursday to discuss derogatory comments the Dallas Stars forward made earlier this week.
Dressed in a grey suit and wearing big, dark designer sunglasses, Avery, the fashion-conscious agitator, brushed by reporters and camera crews as he entered and left NHL headquarters.
Avery landed in hot water Tuesday when he walked over to a group of reporters in Calgary and said he didn't understand why fellow NHLers were falling in love with his "sloppy seconds."
The comment was interpreted as a shot at Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert, Avery's ex-girlfriend.
Hours later, Bettman punished him for making "inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game."
A decision on Avery's full punishment was expected late Thursday or Friday morning.
