Curtis McElhinney makes 30 saves, Pirates defeat IceCaps in shootout @NHL

PORTLAND, Maine - Curtis McElhinney made 30 saves, then shut the door on St. John's in a shootout as the Portland Pirates beat the IceCaps 4-3 in American Hockey League action Saturday.

Marco Rosa, Ben Maxwell and Jason King failed to beat McElhinney, while Portland shooters Patrick O'Sullivan, Andy Miele and Brock Trotter all converted their chances against David Aebischer.

It was the first time the IceCaps have participated in a shootout.

St. John's salvaged a point when John Albert scored with 34 seconds remaining in the third period.

Brett MacLean scored two goals in regulation for the Pirates (13-11-3), while Marc-Antoine Pouliot had the other Portland goal.

Brett Festerling and Jason DeSantis had the other goals for the IceCaps.

Aebischer stopped 29 shots for the IceCaps (16-7-5), who moved one point ahead of Manchester in the Atlantic Division.
