Cup makes second trip to Massachusetts this week

by Tal Pinchevsky

After spending Tuesday and Wednesday in Massachusetts with members of the Los Angeles Kings training and scouting staff, the Stanley Cup spent two days in Quebec with Jonathan Bernier and Simon Gagne before boarding an Air Canada flight for a return trip to the Boston area.

This time it was to spend its second day in the past four years with Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi.

A Boston College product who makes his offseason home in the Boston area, Scuderi enjoyed his first Cup win in 2009 with the Penguins by bringing the Cup to his childhood home on Long Island.

In his first day with the Cup, the veteran defenseman visited the local Nassau County police station, where his father Bob served on the force for 31 years, before arriving at Bethpage High School, where his mother Leslie works as a chemistry teacher. It culminated in a memorable event at Newbridge Park, as locals honored the first Long Island native to have his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup.

Four years later, Scuderi enjoyed another day with the Cup, this time in Dover, Mass., located about 40 minutes from downtown Boston. This time around, the scene may have changed but the event was likely no less special.

After receiving the Cup early in the morning, Scuderi was scheduled to bring the iconic trophy to the Dover Fire Department. It was there local hockey fans could enjoy their moment with the Cup. From there, Scuderi enjoyed a series of events around Dover before the Cup was back on the road. Its next destination will be Brandon, Manitoba, where locals will enjoy two days with the trophy -- one each with Kings assistant general manager Ron Hextall and head equipment manager Darren Granger.
