Cunningham scores on penalty shot in overtime as Vancouver tops Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C - Craig Cunningham scored on a penalty shot in overtime for Vancouver as the Giants beat the Kelowna Rockets 6-5 in the Western Hockey League's season-opener Thursday.

J.T. Barnett with two, and Kevin Connauton, Lance Bouma and James Henry with singles also scored for Vancouver (1-0-0), which rallied from 2-0 and 4-3 deficits for the win. Cunningham also had three assists.

Stepan Novotny scored four times for the Rockets and Mitchell Callahan added the other for Kelowna (0-0-1), which was outshot 37-28.

Callahan added two assists.

Adam Brown made 34 saves for the Rockets, while Jamie Tucker turned aside 23 shots for the Giants.
