Sidney Crosby Captures Eighth ESPY Award as Best NHL Player

Sidney Crosby added another trophy to his mantle on Wednesday night when he won his eighth ESPY Award as the Best NHL Player. The award was announced during the 25th anniversary ESPYs Show, which was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The acronym ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award. ESPYs recognize individual and team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the calendar year preceding a given annual ceremony.

ESPY awards are voted on by the fans.
Crosby won the ESPY for Best NHL Player for the second-straight year. He has also won previously from 2007-10, and 2013-14.
Crosby beat out the Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In addition to winning the ESPY for Best NHL Player, Crosby was one of just four finalists for the prestigious Best Male Athlete award, which was won by Russell Westbrook of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder.
Besides Crosby and Westbrook, other finalists for Best Male Athlete included Chicago Cubs' third baseman Kris Bryant and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps.
The Penguins were a finalist for the final award of the night, Best Team, which went to the Golden State Warriors.
Crosby's eight ESPYs for Best NHL Player are the most by an individual since the awards show debuted in 1993. Penguins' owner Mario Lemieux has the second-most ESPYs with three. The only other players with multiple ESPYs are Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek and former Penguins' winger Jarome Iginla, with two each.
