Cunningham, a forward who played 10 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season, collapsed and was on his back while medical personnel cut away his jersey before moving him off the ice, according to Tucson.com.
Cunningham was taken to a hospital where he was receiving treatment, the Coyotes said.
The game was postponed.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Craig and his family," Arizona general manager John Chayka said in a statement. "We will provide a medical update once we receive more information."
Cunningham, 26, was a fourth-round pick (No. 97) by the Boston Bruins in the 2010 NHL Draft. He has three goals and five assists in 63 NHL games with the Bruins and Coyotes.
"He's in [the] hospital," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said, according to The Arizona Republic. "We'll have more information tomorrow, but it was one of those real scary incidents."
