GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Phoenix Coyotes forward Ray Whitney became the 79th player in NHL history to record 1,000 points in his career at 16:14 of the second period Saturday night when he set up Radim Vrbata for a power-play goal against the Anaheim Ducks.

Whitney's pass across the slot during a 5-on-3 advantage gave Vrbata a wide-open net, and he hit it.

"Verby made a great shot," Whitney said during a between-periods interview on Fox Sports Arizona.

After receiving a long standing ovation from the crowd at Jobing.com Arena, Whitney stayed out on the ice and scored a goal -- and point No. 1,001 -- just 40 seconds later, taking a pass from Vrbata and beating Jeff Deslauriers for his 24th of the season.

The 39-year-old has 75 points this season, eight shy of his career high, and has a point in 11 straight games against Anaheim.
