Coyotes sign Martinook to entry-level deal @NHLdotcom

The Phoenix Coyotes announced Monday that they've signed center Jordan Martinook to an entry-level contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Last season, the 6-foot-1, 209-pound forward tallied 40 goals, 24 assists and 80 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. Martinook ranked second on the Giants in goals and was third on the team in points. He also was 3-6-9 in six playoff games.

"You work all your life to play junior, and then when you’re playing junior you’re hoping to get drafted, then after you get drafted there’s the process of signing," Martinook said on the Coyotes' website Friday. "So, I’ve just been kind of following the steps and it’s kind of been an accelerated process for me, but I’m happy to get it done and I’m excited to get going."

The 20-year-old native of Leduc, Alberta was selected by the Coyotes in the second round (No. 58) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

He is likely to play for Portland of the American Hockey League this season.

"I'm looking forward to my first (NHL) training camp and then I’ll kind of get a feel for where I am and how much more work I need to do," Martinook said. "If the American League is in my sights for this year then I’ll try to grow as much as I can in that league and hopefully take what I have learned into next year."
