John Chayka, general manager of the Arizona Coyotes, sits down with Deb Placey in the 11th episode of the "NHL Executive Suite" podcast, available now on NHL.com and multiple iOS and Android podcast apps.
Hired at 26 years old as the youngest GM in NHL history, Chayka discusses how older GMs have treated him, how he started his own business at the age of 19, and his decision-making process.
"If it's drafting or making a trade or it's free agency, there's a lot of uncertainty and risk in these decisions as well and I don't think people adequately understand that," the 29-year-old said. "These aren't easy decisions. I've been able to learn a lot when there is some disagreement ... really digging in and understanding why and how we can apply this in the future to continue to get better as an organization."
Chayka also discussed the Coyotes making a push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season after having not qualified since 2012.
"I think we are on the right track, we've done a lot of good things," Chayka said. "We have a great team today, it's got an even better pipeline coming and we want to build something sustainable for the long run."
He also talked about how technology, including puck and player tracking, continues to play a role in the game.
"I love the technology developed," he said. "I think the information that's going to come from it is fascinating. I think you're going to see a lot of value in terms of performance based on that information."
