ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -Radim Vrbata scored the tying goal on a power play in the second period and netted the deciding tally in a shootout, giving Phoenix a 2-1 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night in the Coyotes' preseason opener.
Vrbata's goal in the shootout was the difference in the Coyotes' 2-1 edge in the tiebreaker.
While this defeat doesn't mean much to the Ducks (1-1-1), Anaheim learned earlier in the day that new defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks due to a broken bone in his left ankle. Schneider was injured Saturday night in an exhibition victory over Los Angeles.
Schneider, 38, signed a two-year, $11.25-million deal with Anaheim on July 1 as insurance in case captain Scott Niedermayer decides to retire. Niedermayer was suspended by the Ducks when he didn't report to training camp.
Chris Kunitz opened the scoring at 2:55 of the first period, beating David Aebischer to the stick side. Vrbata tied it at 6:24 of the second with a tip-in of Brendan Bell's long wrist shot.
