Cousins scores winner, adds two assists, as the Greyhounds defeat the Spirit 3-2 in OT

SAGINAW, Mich. - Nick Cousins scored the overtime winner as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds edged the host Saginaw Spirit 3-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Cousins, who also chipped in with two assists, scored the winner on a back-hand shot from in front that managed to slip past a sprawling Jake Paterson.

Michael Schumacher and David Broll also scored for the Greyhounds (3-1-0) while Ryan Sproul assisted on all three of his club's goals.

Eric Locke and Frank Schumacher scored for Saginaw (1-2-1).

Matt Murray was outstanding in net for Sault Ste. Marie as he stopped 30-of-32 shots for the victory.

Paterson made 33 saves in a losing effort.

The Greyhounds went 1-for-7 on the power play while the Spirit went 1-for-4.

Saginaw carried the play in a scoreless opening period as they out shot Sault Ste. Marie, 13-5. Vincent Trocheck had the best opportunity to score as he hit the crossbar midway through the period.

The Greyhounds broke the scoreless tie at 7:19 of the second period when Broll back handed a rebound past Paterson while on the power play.

The Spirit proceeded to score a pair of goals 55 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead.

Locke scored on a tip in from in front at 12:53 with the teams playing four on four and Schumacher put Saginaw ahead with a blast from the point at 13:48.
