Schneider was scheduled to play the entire game against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center on Saturday, but was scratched for precautionary reasons with soreness. Anders Lindback made 30 saves in a 5-4 win.
"Hopefully the soreness was a one-time thing and won't be an issue moving forward," Schneider said. "I've liked what I've seen since returning (from the World Cup). We've played fast and aggressive, and guys have been joining the rush and creating opportunities. I know you have to take it with a grain of salt since it's preseason and we don't have a full team, but the philosophy and mindset you want to have in this organization is to play that way.
"We slowly and surely added guys who can play that way, and we're excited to see what happens."
Schneider had said he wanted to play at least two full preseason games and maybe part of a third. Following the game Monday. the Devils play against the Islanders at Prudential Center on Wednesday and the Florida Panthers in West Point, New York, on Saturday.
"We want to give him a full 60 minutes since it's been a while since he's had that," Devils coach John Hynes said. "I think the last time he played a full 60 minutes was in Ottawa in a World Cup exhibition against Canada. So let's get him in there, let him see the puck, play in traffic situations and get some live game action. That's the most important thing."
Schneider allowed four goals on 24 shots in a 5-2 loss to Team Canada in a World Cup pretournament game on Sept. 10.
"It (the World Cup) was a good experience for me to be in a best-on-best environment," Schneider said. "I hadn't done that in a long time, and it's good to be exposed to that and just sort of reinforce that I do belong and I can play at this level. It was fun in that sense but obviously it was a lot of preparation for a short amount of time, unfortunately."
Schneider is looking forward to establishing chemistry with his new teammates. Forward Taylor Hall was acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Adam Larsson on June 29. Veteran defenseman Ben Lovejoy was signed to a three-year, $8-million contract on July 1.
"[Lovejoy] is a solid player and is a player you need to have in order to have success," Schneider said. "He's tremendous on the penalty kill. You need glue guys like that, guys that do the dirty things and block shots, kill penalties. He has a Stanley Cup ring (with the Pittsburgh Penguins) to show for it, so obviously he knows what it means to play that time of year and get the job done."
"Without [Larsson], we're going to need guys to step up and fill those minutes, and Ben is one of those guys."
