Connor Rankin scored a natural hat trick as Tri-City edges Portland 6-5 @NHLdotcom

KENNWICK, Wash. - Connor Rankin scored a natural hat trick in 1:53 span to help the Tri-City Americans to a 6-5 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in Western Hockey League action Sunday night.

After the Americans (2-0-0) built a 2-0 first-period lead Rankin scored his first goal 32 seconds into the second period, with his second coming at the 2:16 mark and his third coming nine seconds later. The centre also added an assist.

Mason Wilgosh chipped in with a goal and two assists for Tri-City, while Brian Williams and Mackenzie Royer added a goal and an assist while.

Ty Rattie scored twice and added an assist for Portland (2-1-0), while Taylor Peters added a pair and Brad Ross rounded outthe scoring.

Eric Comrie made 32 saves for the Americans, while Brendan Burke stopped 8-of-12 shots for the Winterhawks before being pulled for Mac Carruth early in the second. Caruth let in two goals on 12 shots.
