COLUMBUS -- Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was forced to leave the game against the Detroit Red Wings at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday night after the first period due to illness.

Bobrovsky, who made his 19th consecutive start for Columbus despite a case of the flu, stopped nine of 10 shots in the opening period.

Backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney started the second period for the Blue Jackets. Earlier in the day, Columbus recalled goalie Mike McKenna from Springfield of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis because Bobrovsky had flu-like symptoms. McKenna did not dress.

The Blue Jackets led 2-1 when Bobrovsky led and won the game 4-2.
