Cam Atkinson, Blue Jackets rally past Senators in OT

OTTAWA -- Cam Atkinson scored on a breakaway 1:09 into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 7-6 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday.
It was Atkinson's second goal of the game and 23rd of the season. Nick Foligno and Zach Werenski each scored power-play goals, and Scott Harrington scored his first NHL goal for Columbus (32-10-4). The Blue Jackets are 5-5-0 following their 16-game winning streak, the second longest in NHL history.

Mike Hoffman and Zack Smith each scored two goals, and Mark Stone and Kyle Turris scored for the Senators (25-15-5), who were coming off a 3-0 road trip. Mike Condon made 22 saves in his 13th consecutive start.

Joonas Korpisalo made 28 saves in his third start of the season for the Blue Jackets.
Atkinson, who had chased Senators captain Erik Karlsson up the ice, jumped on Karlsson's missed shot that rimmed around the boards in the Columbus zone. Atkinson broke away from the red line, skated in and scored on a deke to Condon's glove side.

"I was trying to catch Karlsson first," Atkinson said. "The guy is one of the fastest guys in the League. I kind of anticipated. I was turning when he was about to shoot it. Luckily he just missed the net and I got a breakaway and I just went to my go-to."
The Blue Jackets, who started a season-long five-game road trip, rallied from two goals down when Lukas Sedlak and Matt Calvert scored 31 seconds apart to start the third period and tie the game 5-5.
Turris tied the game 6-6 on the power play at 12:39.

Hoffman and Stone scored 2:27 apart in the second period starting at 13:08 to give the Senators a 4-3 lead.
"Definitely a crazy night. Probably not the way we drew it up," Harrington said. "I think it was a good gut check by our team and I guess you could say a character win. The second period didn't really go the way we wanted it to and we wanted to respond in the third as fast as possible. That's a win [that] definitely feels good to get rewarded with in overtime."

Goal of the game

Atkinson scored his first goal of the game on a deflection to give the Blue Jackets a 6-5 lead at 10:50 of the third period. "It just popped up," Condon said. "I was getting out to catch it and just missed it. It's a tough goal, but those things happen."

With six minutes to go in the second period, Korpisalo stopped two shots by Turris, who had batted the puck out of the air and onto his stick. Korpisalo made a strong move to his left to stop Turris' shot off his own rebound.

Atkinson jumped on a missed shot by Karlsson for a breakaway and deked Condon for the winner in overtime.

Unsung performance of the game

After getting hit on the inside of his right ankle by a Karlsson shot with 13 minutes left in the third period, Werenski left the game. When told it wasn't broken, he returned, but said it took three shifts before he got the feeling back in his leg. "I immediately thought the worst," Werenski said. "I've never felt that kind of pain."
