Carey Price, Canadiens shut out Blue Jackets

MONTREAL -- Carey Price's sense that the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets would play a low-scoring game was ultimately proven right.
Price made 26 saves for his third shutout, and Alex Galchenyuk scored a power-play goal with 1:07 remaining in overtime to give Montreal a 1-0 win at Bell Centre on Tuesday.

"It was just the way both teams were playing," said Price, whose 39th NHL shutout was his first since Nov. 12. "We were playing tight-checking hockey. It was not a ton of chances being generated, but it was definitely fun, it was definitely one a goalie would like to play in."

Shea Weber got his 300th NHL assist when he set up Galchenyuk's one-timer from the point for Montreal (35-21-8), which extended its winning streak to three games, each in overtime. Max Pacioretty's assist was his 400th NHL point.
Galchenyuk scored a power-play goal in overtime to give Montreal a 4-3 win at New Jersey on Monday. The Canadiens, who fired coach Michel Therrien on Feb. 14 and replaced him with Claude Julien, did not have a regulation win in February while going 5-7-1.
The Canadiens had lost five straight at home (0-4-1).
"It was a really tight game," Galchenyuk said. "It was like a playoff [game]. The crowd was buzzing and we really wanted to get that win on home ice, and happy we did."
Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves for Columbus (39-16-6), including a highlight-reel pad save on Pacioretty with 3:58 remaining in the third period.

"Yeah, he played good," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "It's his job. At this time of year, that's his job. I don't think we should keep saying it's spectacular. This is what goalies do for teams that are going to try to get there at the end of the year, so this is a responsibility. I though both of them tonight made some key saves for their team."
Tortorella refused to comment about the holding penalty called against Columbus defenseman Seth Jones in overtime. Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said the call was disappointing.
"I think that's a big game-changer at that point in the game," Foligno said. "I don't see a penalty, and I think in overtime especially it better be real blatant for it to be a call. Those guys are two good referees, so it was just surprising."
There was a lengthy delay for a video review at 1:11 of overtime. Referee Marc Joanette's on-ice ruling was upheld after he waved off a potential goal by Pacioretty, who raced down the ice to take a pass off the boards from Phillip Danault.
Montreal had a goal waved off in the first period when Joanette blew his whistle before Andrew Shaw shot a loose puck in the goal mouth past Bobrovsky.

Goal of the game

Galchenyuk worked his way around from the right side towards the slot while he and Weber passed the puck back and forth to find a shooting lane around Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson before slapping a one-timer into the top left corner with Alexander Radulov providing a screen. "I didn't see the puck at all," Bobrovsky said.

Save of the game

Price made a save on Cam Atkinson on a setup by Jack Johnson in overtime after making a blocker save on the latter.

Highlight of the game

Bobrovsky stretched out his left leg to make a pad save on Pacioretty's shot from the right edge of the crease on Andrei Markov's setup from the slot.

Unsung performance of the game

Jordie Benn led the Canadiens with five blocked shots in his Montreal debut after he was acquired from the Dallas Stars in a trade for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft on Monday. Benn was paired with Nathan Beaulieu and played 15:09.

Need to know

The Canadiens acquired defenseman Brandon Davidson from the Edmonton Oilers during the game in a trade for forward David Desharnais, who was not in the lineup. "That hurts," Price said. "He's a good friend of mine for sure. Love the guy. It's part of the business and I wish him all the best."
