CBJ@DAL: Oettinger lifts Stars with first NHL shutout

Jake Oettinger made 21 saves for his first NHL shutout, and the Dallas Stars defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0 at American Airlines Center in Dallas on Saturday.

Oettinger, the No. 26 pick of the 2017 NHL Draft, played his ninth NHL game. He is 3-1-3 in seven starts.
"It's a dream come true, really special," he said. "My brother and my sister were here tonight, so I was really happy that they're able to see that live.
"The guys just did such a good job. They've been playing great in front of me the whole year. I can't say enough good things about the way we played tonight."
Roope Hintz had a goal and an assist for the Stars (7-8-4), who had lost four in a row.

CBJ@DAL: Hintz makes nifty move and nets superb goal

Joonas Korpisalo, making his seventh straight start, allowed four goals on 22 shots and was pulled 9:17 into the third period for the Blue Jackets (10-11-5). Veini Vehvilainen made three saves in relief in his NHL debut.
Dallas split the two-game set here. Columbus won 3-2 on Thursday.
"If you're going to make it at the end here, you have to be able to string one, two, three, four sets together," Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said. "The first one puts you in position to sweep a series, so to speak. We have to find ways to do that. The teams that are in the playoff picture right now are the ones doing that."
The Stars scored twice in 45 seconds in the first period.
"They put us on our toes and we weren't ready for the forechecking," Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones said. "They were just quicker the first five, seven minutes of the game. It's hard to get out of that hole we put ourselves in."
Jason Dickinson poked in his fourth goal at 2:24 to make it 1-0. Columbus challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld on video review.
"It's simple. Get to the net," Dickinson said. "When you're not scoring, that's one of the easiest things you can do to try and create offense. Just get in there and stir something up."

CBJ@DAL: Pavelski backhands puck home on power play

During the penalty for delay of game, Joe Pavelski scored his NHL-best ninth power-play goal to make it 2-0 at 3:09.
"We can complain about the play at the beginning of the game, but we still don't score a goal to try to go against that," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "We didn't have enough consistency from our offensive guys throughout the game."
Hintz returned from missing one game with a lower-body injury to set up Pavelski's 11th goal. Hintz passed from the left circle to the slot, where Pavelski shoveled a backhand for the Stars' second power-play goal in the past 19 tries.
"He's been good all year," Pavelski said of Hintz. "When he's in the lineup he definitely gives us a different element. Obviously, getting that power play going was important. It's been a little quiet."

CBJ@DAL: Heiskanen wires wrister to extend Stars lead

Miro Heiskanen made it 3-0 at 13:46 of the second period. It was his second goal in as many games after not scoring in his first 17.
Oettinger was tested 59 seconds into the third period. Foligno was alone in front and put a backhand off the right post. He got the rebound, but Oettinger stuck out his left pad and Foligno could not lift the puck.
"This kid is a great kid, a tremendous competitor, but he works," Stars coach Rick Bowness said. "Good to see him get his first shutout tonight. But it's his work ethic, and he's a great teammate. We're all very happy for him."
Hintz increased the lead to 4-0 at 9:17 with toe drag and backhand for his fifth goal before Radek Faksa scored shorthanded at 19:19 for the 5-0 final.
NOTES: Oettinger (22 years, 78 days) is the second-youngest goalie in Stars/Minnesota North Stars history to get a shutout (Pete LoPresti, 20 years, 261 days, Feb. 8, 1975 and 21 years, 159 days, Oct. 29, 1975). … The win was Dallas' first at home against Columbus since Dec. 15, 2015. … Columbus forward Patrik Laine has gone six games without a point after scoring 10 points (six goals, four assists) in his first 10 games after being acquired in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 23.
