KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Tri-City Americans got a hat trick from Colton Yellow Horn and a shutout by Chet Pickard in beating the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-0 at Toyota Center to tie their WHL best-of-seven semifinal 1-1.
Shaun Vey scored the Americans' first goal at 3:54 of the first on the power play, followed by Yellow Horn's three goals, all on the man advantage.
Vy also added two assists, as did T.J. Fast, Taylor Procyshen and Jason Reese, while Pickard had 22 saves in his first playoff shutout.
"Our key guys were good," said Tri-City coach Don Nachbaur, whose team lost 7-1 in the first game of the series. "Last night was an eye-opener. Tonight we played with more passion."
Riku Helenius made 27 saves for Seattle before being replaced by Jacob DeSerres with just under eight minutes to play. DeSerres stopped all five shots he faced.
Games 3 and 4 of the series will be Tuesday and Wednesday at KeyArena in Seattle, with Game 5 at Toyota Center on Friday.
