Colorado Avalanche re-sign defencemen Adam Foote and John-Michael Liles @NHLdotcom

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche re-signed defencemen John-Michael Liles and Adam Foote on Monday.

Liles, who led all Avs defencemen with 32 points (6-26) in 81 games last season, signed a US$16.8-million, four-year contract while Foote got a $6-million, two-year deal.

Liles, a 27-year-old Indianapolis native, recorded 20 of his 32 points on the power play and finished third on the club with 121 blocked shots. He had five points (2-3) in 10 post-season games.

"John is entering the prime years of his career," Avs GM Francois Giguere said in a release. "His puck movement and skating abilities will allow him to support our offence and compliment the rest of our defence corps."

Liles has recorded 159 points (44-115) over 313 career NHL regular-season games with Colorado.

Foote, who turns 37 on July 10, began last season with Columbus before being acquired by the Avalanche at the trade deadline. He had 16 points (1-15) and 107 penalty minutes in 75 games for the Avalanche and Blue Jackets last season. He also skated in all 10 playoff games for Colorado.

"(Adam) has been an important leader for this franchise for many years and we're counting on him to play the same role over the next two seasons," Giguere said.

Liles will receive $3.7 million next season, $4.125 million in 2009-'10, $4.425 million in 2010-'11 and $4.550 million in 2011-'12. Foote will receive $2.75 million next season and $3.25 million in 2009-'10.

Foote, a Toronto native, has recorded 284 points (65-219) and 1,407 penalty minutes in 998 career NHL regular-season games with the Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques and Columbus. A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Avalanche, he has 41 points (7-34) in 164 career playoff games.
