PLYMOUTH, Mi. - Rookie goaltender Chris Perugini made 39 saves as the Ottawa 67's defeated the Plymouth Whalers 7-3 in Friday night Ontario Hockey League action.
Ottawa (23-23-2-2) used a surprisingly strong power play and balanced attack as they snapped a six-game losing skid. Jamie McGinn, Jason Bailey, Thomas Kiriakou, Adam Zamec and Julien Demers each had a goal and an assist while rookies Ryan Martindale and Michael Latta added singles. Defenseman Radim Ostrcil chipped in with four helpers.
The 67's, ranked 17th on the power play heading into the game, went 4-for-10 with the extra man.
Despite the lopsided final, the game was in doubt until late in the third period, when Ottawa scored three times in the final two minutes.
The Whalers took two late bench minors that proved costly in an attempt to generate a comeback. Ottawa led 2-0 in the first and 3-2 heading into the final period before Plymouth's Ryan Hayes netted his second of the game early in the third. Bailey scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 6:42.
Plymouth (26-19-2-2) also got a goal from rookie Tyler J. Brown. Goalie Jeremy Smith finished with 26 saves.
