Chris Drury 2.12

Chris Drury was named general manager on Friday of the United States men's ice hockey team that will compete at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.

Drury, the associate GM of the New York Rangers, will be assisted by the United States Men's National Team Advisory Group, which is led by John Vanbiesbrouck, USA Hockey assistant executive director of hockey operations, and includes nine NHL GMs: Kevyn Adams (Buffalo Sabres), Stan Bowman (Chicago Blackhawks), Tom Fitzgerald (New Jersey Devils), Jeff Gorton (Rangers), Bill Guerin (Minnesota Wild), Lou Lamoriello (New York Islanders), David Poile (Nashville Predators), Don Waddell (Carolina Hurricanes) and Bill Zito (Florida Panthers).
The tournament is scheduled to be played May 21-June 6, in Riga, Latvia.
"I'm humbled to be asked and really excited about the tournament," Drury said. "It's always such an honor to represent our country on the international stage. We have as much depth in our player pool as we've ever had and I look forward to working with our Men's National Team Advisory Group in putting together a team that will give us the best chance to bring home a gold medal."
Drury, who played 12 NHL seasons, previously served as GM of the United States for the 2019 World Championship, where it finished seventh after losing 4-3 to Russia in the semifinals. He also was part of the management group for the 2016 and 2017 World Championship.
Drury was named GM for the 2020 tournament before it was canceled due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
"It's great to have Chris back as the general manager of our men's national team," Vanbiesbrouck said. "He's transitioned from his days as a player and emerged as one of the bright young stars on the management side of the game. Together with our Men's National Team Advisory Group, we're very fortunate to have an experienced and passionate group involved to help us put together a team that will compete for a gold medal."
Drury, who is in his sixth season working in the Rangers front office, was promoted to associate GM on Feb. 5.
A center selected in the third round (No. 72) of the 1994 NHL Draft, Drury scored 615 points (255 goals, 360 assists) in 892 games with the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres and Rangers. He won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001.
In addition to his managerial experience with USA Hockey, Drury played for the United States at the Olympics three times, winning the silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and at the World Championship three times (1997, 1998, 2004). He was elected to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
