The Chicago Blackhawks unveiled their uniform for the 2019 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, to be played against the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium on Jan. 1.
Paying homage to the Blackhawks' 1933-34 uniform, the season they won their first Stanley Cup championship, the black and white uniform features heritage materials and striping. Highlighting the throwback look, the Blackhawks crest features a combination of felt letters and chain stitching. To complete the theme, the player names and numbers feature single-layer felt materials.
"Steeped in rich tradition, the Blackhawks sweater is one of the most iconic jerseys in all of professional sports, and I'm proud to say I wore that jersey on two different occasions playing for my hometown team," said "NHL on NBC" analyst Eddie Olczyk, who played for the Blackhawks from 1984-87 and 1998-2000. "The 2019 Chicago Blackhawks Winter Classic jersey carries on that great legacy, while utilizing cutting-edge technology and materials that are anything but traditional."
The Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band played prior to the ceremony, and simulated snow fell as the uniform, worn by Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, was unveiled on the video board.
Additional design details include the years the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup (1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013, 2015) emblazoned onto the interior neckline, paired with the classic hash marks of Notre Dame Stadium as a nod to the end zone pattern.
Several hundred fans gathered for the unveiling. Antonia Toromanovic, 20, of Glenview, Illinois, said she liked the uniform.
"I like buying all of the Winter Classic jerseys. I get them every time they get released," said Toromanovic, who was wearing the Blackhawks jersey from the 2015 Winter Classic, when the Blackhawks lost to the Washington Capitals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. "I like the bottom part and all the black and white. This has a sleek look to it. It's really cool."
Boston unveiled its uniform earlier Thursday.
Be there when these teams take the ice at iconic Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana on New Year's Day (1 p.m. ET; NBC, SN, TVAS). Tickets to the 2019 Winter Classic are available at NHL.com/WinterClassicTickets.
