ERIE, Pa. - Chris Chappell and Jack Combs had a goal and an assist apiece and goaltender Edward Pasquale made 34 saves to lead the Saginaw Spirit past the Erie Otters 3-2 in the Ontario Hockey League on Friday night.
The Spirit played like the fresher, more aggressive team in the opening minutes. Forty-six seconds into the game, Saginaw (8-4-0-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead on Chappell's goal as the Otters failed to clear a loose puck in front of sprawled-out goaltender Jaroslav Janus.
Jordan Skellett, traded from Erie to Saginaw earlier this month for defenseman Chris Breen, had an assist. Skellett has three goals and seven points in six games. Less than 10 minutes later, Combs' goal dropped the listless Otters into a 2-0 hole.
After Zack Torquato sliced the deficit to 2-1 with 8:03 left in the first, the Otters' play improved in the second period, but the Spirit regained a two-goal lead on Kain Allicock's tip-in goal.
Erie (5-9-1-0) outshot the Spirit 15-4 in the third period and Anthony Luciani out-battled Saginaw's defence to move the Otters within 3-2 with 3:05 left, but the Otters were unable to complete the comeback with their net empty in the final minute.
Janus stopped 21 shots in a losing effort for Erie.
