CAR@WSH: Ovechkin rips one-timer to tie Shanahan

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored his 49th goal of the season to help the Washington Capitals extend their lead in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Capital One Arena on Tuesday.

Ovechkin gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 4:31 of the third period with his 656th NHL goal, tying Brendan Shanahan for 13th place. It was his first goal in five games.
"I had lots of chances to score tonight, but finally I got one because I think the last couple games I didn't use my chances," said Ovechkin, who is on the verge of becoming the third NHL player with at least eight 50-goal seasons. "It was an important goal and I'm happy with the win."

The Capitals (45-24-8), 11-3-1 in their past 15 games, moved three points ahead of the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metropolitan. New York lost 4-0 at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes (42-27-7), who trail the Islanders and Penguins by four points for second place in the Metropolitan and hold the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal defeated the Florida Panthers 6-1 at home on Tuesday.
"They were good. We were not," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "Put those two together and we really had no chance in that game. That's what it felt like the whole way. We never got to our game."
Evgeny Kuznetsov had three assists, and Braden Holtby made 27 saves for Washington, which visits Carolina on Thursday to complete the home-and-home.
"He was looking good," Holtby said of Kuznetsov. "He's playing really well, and we need him to play well in order to have success."
T.J. Oshie gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 16:29 of the first period when he scored from low in the left circle off a pass through the crease by Kuznetsov.

Hamilton tied it 1-1 with a slap shot from the point on a delayed penalty at 15:38 of the second.
"I think we were maybe a little bit [fortunate], but I think we liked the position we were in [after two periods]," Hamilton said. "We talked about how good we've been in the third being in those positions and on the road and stuff against the best teams. We were fine with it and we didn't show up really."
Ovechkin scored on a one-timer from the high slot on a feed from Tom Wilson, tying his goal total from last season. He leads the NHL in goals as he did last season.
John Carlson made 3-1 when he redirected a pass from Dmitry Orlov at 11:16.
"It looked like it was kind of bobbling a little bit," Carlson said. "I tried to get as much on it as I could. I saw him look at me right away, so I didn't even have to yell or anything. He made a nice play."

Nicklas Backstrom scored into an empty net at 17:33 for the 4-1 final.
"Obviously, their high-end skill (guys) made a big play and [Ovechkin] scored goals like he does," Carolina forward Justin Williams said. "And you get behind and they made another play."
Petr Mrazek made 24 saves for Carolina.

They said it

"We can throw that game out. We just didn't come out with the urgency we needed. We're the desperate team. We've been pushing these guys for so long and hard, you could just see for whatever reason tonight we just didn't have it." -- Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour
"I thought it was a strong team game for us. One of our better ones overall in terms of getting everybody's committed game defensively, especially. Then when we got our chances our top guys were able to convert, and that's always a nice advantage to have." -- Capitals coach Todd Reirden
