HURRICANES (9-9-5) at RANGERS (16-8-1)
1 p.m. ET; MSG, FS-CR, NHL.TV

Hurricanes team scope

The Carolina Hurricanes are back at Madison Square Garden after losing there Tuesday 3-2. "The nice thing is, it's all head to head, nothing much is going to change," coach Bill Peters said. "We know what we're up against and nobody is trying to trick anybody. It's just going out and winning your matchups." The Hurricanes are 1-3-1 in their past five games despite allowing 11 goals (they've scored eight). Carolina lost 2-1 to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Thursday and had a 2-0 lead in the first period against the Rangers. Center Jordan Staal (concussion) is on injured reserve, and it's possible Carolina will be without center Elias Lindholm, who missed practice Friday with a lower-body injury. "The opportunity is staring guys right in the face with the injury to Jordan Staal," Peters said. "Unbelievable opportunity for people stepping up on the power play, stepping up on the penalty kill, stepping up on big, important faceoffs. Now if [Lindholm] is out, somebody else gets an unbelievable opportunity. The important thing is, we're all going to be watching and we're going to see what you do with your opportunity. Capitalize on your opportunity. I thought our effort was outstanding in Boston and we're going to need a similar type effort {Saturday] in New York."

Rangers team scope

Though the Hurricanes are difficult to play against with the way they possess the puck and play solid defense, don't blame the Rangers if they are slyly happy that Carolina is back in their building for a second game in five days. The Rangers have won 12 straight against the Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden and are 20-3-0 against Carolina in their past 23 dating to Feb. 22, 2011. It is the longest home winning streak against one opponent in Rangers history. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist will start; he is 10-0-0 with a 1.17 goals-against average and .962 save percentage in his past 10 home starts against Carolina, dating to Jan. 5, 2011. The Rangers are coming off a 4-3 road loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, a game they led 3-2 lead in the third period. New York is 7-0-1 after a loss this season.

Status report

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said he wasn't sure about the defense pairs but it was likely that Klein, who was scratched against the Sabres, would get back in the lineup. "I feel good," Klein said after practice Friday. "Just clear the mind today, go back at it, be a professional." … Miller didn't practice because of what Vigneault called a nagging knee injury, but he is expected to be in the lineup. … Peters said he didn't have any update on Lindholm, but when he saw him Friday morning "He sounded optimistic." He said he had to meet with trainer Peter Friesen to find out if Lindholm could play. Peters also said he was thinking about which goalie would start; Ward has allowed two goals or fewer in eight of his past nine.

Who's hot
