Carolina Hurricanes beat Thrashers for first pre-season win

RALEIGH, N.C. - Joe Corvo scored on a 5-on-3 power play with 11:52 remaining, snapping a tie to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 on Friday night for their first win in three exhibition games.

Scott Walker, Eric Staal and Ray Whitney also scored for the Hurricanes, who led 2-0 midway through the game. Staal and Whitney had two assists apiece.

Tim Stapleton, Maxim Afinogenov and Michael Vernace scored for Atlanta, with Afinogenov's power-play tally tying the game in the third period.

Carolina held a 15-1 edge in shots through the first 24 minutes.

Atlanta goalie Manny Legace stopped 25 of 27 shots in two periods in his pre-season debut for the Thrashers. Staal's second-period goal went in off the stick of Atlanta defenceman Paul Postma.

Hurricanes right-winger Tom Kostopoulos didn't return after he was knocked to the ice during a first-period fight with Atlanta's Josh Gratton.

The Hurricanes used a roster full of veterans, while Atlanta skated without mainstays Vyacheslav Kozlov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Colby Armstrong and Pavel Kubina.
