The Washington Capitals on Wednesday recalled goalie Philipp Grubauer from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey.

As a rookie with the Hershey Bears this season, the 21-year-old has posted a 6-4-1 record with a 2.10 goals-against average, a .928 save percentage and one shutout in 12 games.

He spent the first half of the season in the ECHL with Reading and was named a starter in the ECHL All-Star game after going 19-5-1 with a 2.30 GAA and .912 save percentage in 26 appearances. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound German was selected by the Capitals in the fourth round (No. 112) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

The Capitals recalled Grubauer on Wednesday morning because Michal Neuvirth is ill. Grubauer will likely serve as backup to Braden Holtby against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday.
