Season series: The Washington Capitals are going for a sweep of their two games against the Calgary Flames. They met at Verizon Center on Oct. 3, a game in which the Capitals overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 to beat the Flames 5-4 in a shootout. This is Washington's first visit to Calgary since Oct. 30, 2010, when the Capitals won 7-2.
Big story: The Flames are back at Scotiabank Saddledome after a 5-1 loss at the Dallas Stars on Thursday that gave them a 1-4-0 record on a five-game road trip. Calgary might be catching Washington at the wrong time; the Capitals have won three in a row, including two straight to begin a five-game trip.
Capitals: After a slow start, Washington appears to be hitting its stride. The Capitals breezed to a 4-1 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. Alex Ovechkin's 10th goal in as many games opened the scoring and made him the first player in the NHL to reach double figures.
“It was huge for us obviously for Ovi to get us on the board and get us going," said forward Joel Ward, whose second-period goal made it 2-0. "That’s what he does. That’s his job, to lead the troops. We just have to follow behind."
Flames: Calgary ended its road trip with a thud, allowing three quick goals in the second period on the way to a decisive loss to the Stars. The Flames were 3-0-2 when they started the trip; they're back to .500 as they prepare for three in a row at home against Eastern Conference teams
"We're not quitters over here, but it's a results-oriented business and it was a terrible road trip," left wing TJ Gagliardi said. "We just had breakdowns and off-man rushes. They're skilled enough where they're going to make you pay."
Who's hot: Ovechkin has 32 goals in his past 31 regular-season games dating to March 17. He has eight goals in seven meetings with the Flames. … Jiri Hudler leads the Flames with 12 points in 10 games and had a nine-game points streak snapped at Dallas.
Injury report: Washington is without defenseman Jack Hillen (leg), who's on long-term injured reserve. … Calgary has been without defenseman Mark Giordano (lower body) for the past two games.
