Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner had sports hernia surgery to repair his pelvic floor Wednesday. He is expected to be ready for the start of next season.

Alzner, 27, has not missed a regular-season or Stanley Cup Playoff game since joining the Capitals full-time in 2010-11, and has 104 points in 509 regular-season games. Alzner had four goals and 17 assists in 82 games and two assists in 12 playoff games this season.

He averaged 21:23 of ice time during the playoffs but was injured in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 10. Washington lost to eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh in six games.
