The Washington Capitals on Tuesday sent defenseman Nate Schmidt to Hershey of the American Hockey League.
Schmidt, 23, had been recalled Sunday as a precaution in case veteran Tim Gleason wouldn't be able to play Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round series against the New York Rangers. Gleason played 12:32 in the Capitals' 1-0 victory; Schmidt was a healthy scratch.
Game 4 will be Wednesday at Verizon Center (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports 2).
Schmidt will rejoin a Hershey team starting its Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' AHL affiliate, on Wednesday.
