The Vancouver Canucks
shored up their goaltending depth Monday by signing veteran Andrew Raycroft
to serve as Roberto Luongo
's backup. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Raycroft, 29, was 12-16 with a 3.14 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage for the Colorado Avalanche
last season. He played in 31 games while Peter Budaj
saw the majority of the action in net playing in 56 games.
The Canucks' goaltending situation turned tenuous when Jason LaBarbera
left to sign with the Phoenix Coyotes
. Cory Schneider
remained the only other goalie in the organization with NHL experience, but his comes in the form of eight games he played this past season when both Luongo and former backup Curtis Sanford
In eight NHL seasons, Raycroft has played for three teams, including Toronto and Boston, and is 94-96-16 with six shutouts, a 2.90 GAA and .899 save percentage. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year in 2003-04 while with Boston.
