The 25-year-old forward is in the final season of a two-year contract he agreed to Sept. 23, 2020. He could have become a restricted free agent July 13, 2022.
"Last week, I was going into the season planning on betting on myself again and I just think when that offer comes up I think no matter what it's a lot of money and I wouldn't have expected this a few years ago even," Evans said Monday. "And I just love this city. I love playing here. I've had so much fun these past few years and the teammates, I've been growing so close to them, they're like brothers now, so when that offer came up there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to get it done. And it is a huge relief to have it in place and know where I can be in the future."
Evans scored 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 47 games last season and two points (one goal, one assist) in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Canadiens reach the Cup Final, when they lost in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has scored 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 60 regular-season games, all for Montreal.
"With the offer and contract that I got it shows they have confidence in me and believe in me," Evans said. "So, that's a huge sigh of relief and a great feeling as a player to know that the team wants you for a few more years and they have that belief that you can help the team. So, it's great to know but it's also more motivation to prove them right now and keep going. I mean it's weird, it's usually proving people wrong but now it's proving people right I guess and just keep building on my game."
