Two of Canada's NHL teams are going head to head -- or 'stache to 'stache, as it were -- in a spirited bi-coastal battle. And it's all for a good cause.
Thursday, as the annual "Movember" charity drive began, the Montreal Canadiens' Twitter page issued a good-natured challenge to the west-coast rival Vancouver Canucks. The wager was inspired by the beginning of Movember, an annual campaign to raise awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Numerous NHL clubs participate in the drive, in which volunteers solicit donations to the cause by letting their moustaches grow out through the month of November.
"Movember time! How 'bout a friendly wager?" the Canadiens' tweeted, specifically calling out the Canucks.
Not long after, the Canucks' Twitter feed provided a response.
"Boom. We're in," they replied.
The team that raises the most money will be able to claim bragging rights, and the losing team's mascot must pose wearing the winning team's jersey. That could put Montreal's Youppi! or Vancouver's Fin in an awkward position -- but it's likely worth a few moments of discomfort if it means raising money for a charitable cause.
Moments after the terms of the wager were agreed to, each team issued a challenge to its fans on their respective websites.
"If you've ever wanted to see what you look like with a little lip carpet, now's your chance," charged the Canucks' site.
Those interested in participating in Movember can register at Movember.com. Last year was a banner year for the campaign, which officially launched for the first time in Belgium, Denmark and Norway. In all, more than 854,000 "Mo Bros and Mo Sistas" registered, raising $126.3 million for men's health issues.
