Canadiens acquire Schneider from Thrashers @NHL

MONTREAL (AP) -The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Mathieu Schneider from the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday for two draft picks.

Schneider began his career with Montreal and helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup in 1993.

"We were looking for a defenseman who could contribute offensively," general manager Bob Gainey said in a release. "Mathieu, an experienced player with a lot of offensive upside, will bring depth to our core group of defensemen and will be an asset on our power play."

The Thrashers received second- and third-round picks for the 39-year-old Schneider, who has four goals and 11 assists in 44 games this season.

Schneider, who played for Montreal from 1987-1995, has 216 goals and 501 assists in 1,241 career games. He also has played for the New York Islanders, Toronto, the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, Detroit, Anaheim and Atlanta.
