Canada beats Latvia 4-2 to advance to world hockey semifinal

BERN, Switzerland - Canada is into the semifinals at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

The Canadians edged Latvia 4-2 in Thursday's quarter-final game in Bern, Switzerland. Dany Heatley, Dan Hamhuis, Steve Stamkos and Matthew Lombardi scored for Canada. Goalie Chris Mason had 21 saves.

Edgas Masalskis made 44 stops for Latvia, who got goals from Herberts Vasiljevs and Guntis Galvins.

Canada will face Sweden or the Czech Republic in Friday's semifinals. Those two teams play later Thursday.

Defending champion Russia meets the United States in the other semifinal.
