EDMONTON - Bretton Cameron scored the game winner early in the second period and added an assist as the Medicine Hat Tigers opened their WHL season Friday with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

With the teams tied 1-1, Cameron put the Tigers (1-0-0-0) ahead to stay on a power play at 5:49 of the second period with a deft snapshot inside the faceoff circle that beat Edmonton netminder Dalyn Flette.

Medicine Hat opened the scoring 4:13 into the game, with Colton Grant converting a Cameron rebound off Flette's right pad.

Jeff Lee replied eight minutes later for the Oil Kings (0-1-0-0), burying his own rebound past Tigers goaltender Ryan Holfeld.

Cameron's goal gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes, and defenceman Mark Isherwood extended the lead at 1:26 of the third. Zdenek Okal made it 4-1 at 9:49, picking up a loose puck in the slot and wiring it past Flette's glove.

Matthew Konan ended the scoring at 14:12, tipping in a Josh Koper point shot.

Brennan Bosch added two assists in the victory.

Holfeld turned aside 26 shots to earn the win. Flette made 19 saves for the Oil Kings.
