Zadina lifts Red Wings to 2-1 win

DETROIT -- Ville Husso made 15 of his 35 saves in the third period, helping the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Calgary Flames 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday.

Filip Zadina got the go-ahead goal in his first game in more than three months, and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit (22-20-8), which had lost two in a row.
"Everyone in this league is a pro and works hard to come back from injuries, but [Zadina] took that to another level," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. "He has worked extremely, extremely hard and it was great to see him rewarded for it."
Blake Coleman scored for Calgary (24-18-10), which has lost three of four (1-2-1). Dan Vladar made 15 saves but had his point streak stopped at 13 games (10-0-3), which tied the Flames record.
"We're struggling to create offense right now, so we have to find ways to get ugly goals," Coleman said. "We can't expect highlight-reel goals. We have to have guys willing to pay the price to get to the net."

CGY@DET: Zadina puts Red Wings ahead in the 3rd

Zadina made it 2-1 at 5:51 of the third period, finishing a 2-on-1 with Oskar Sundqvist for his first goal of the season in his 10th game. Robert Hagg, playing for the first time since Dec. 8, got the secondary assist.
Zadina hadn't played since the forward sustained a lower-body injury while blocking a shot against the New York Islanders on Nov. 5.
"Obviously, that felt pretty good," Zadina said. "It felt even better that it helped us win a game."
The Flames were missing defenseman Rasmus Andersson, who was hit by a vehicle while riding a scooter Wednesday. Andersson is day to day.
"I think that was maybe the elephant in the room we were dealing with in the first period," Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. "But we held them to 17 shots in a road game and we had chances to tie it or take the lead.
"They just got the big goal, something we've seen a lot this year."

CGY@DET: Larkin nets PPG to tie the score

The Red Wings had six shots on a four-minute power play in the second period after Nikita Zadorov was called for a high-sticking double minor at 4:45, but they did not score. Vladar made a blocker save on David Perron at 5:46 to keep the game tied 0-0.
"We know we're not going to score a lot of goals, but it feels like we've been asking ourselves 'How did that not go in?' a lot lately," Lalonde said. "That's when you hope the hockey gods are going to help you out a bit."
Calgary took a 1-0 lead on Coleman's tip of a Noah Hanifin shot at 18:07 of the second, but Larkin tied it 1-1 on the power play at 19:46.
The Red Wings had gone 161:46 without a goal against the Flames, dating to Larkin's goal at 18:00 of the third during a 4-2 loss here Feb. 23, 2020.
"You're going to be tied in the third period of a lot of games at this point in the season," Calgary defenseman Chris Tanev said. "That's true of every team in the playoff race, so you have to find ways to win those games."

CGY@DET: Coleman deflects in opening goal

Husso swatted away Andrew Mangiapane's tip attempt with 3:24 left in the third period. He then made a point-blank save on Tyler Toffoli with 6.4 seconds left with Calgary making a push while short-handed for the final 51 seconds after Mangiapane was called for interference.
"This is almost like playoff intensity for us," Husso said. "There are about 30 games left, and we still want to make it. That's up to us."
