Grand Rapids defeats Syracuse in Game 1 of Calder Cup Finals

Tomas Nosek scored a power-play goal with 14 seconds left in the third period to give Grand Rapids a 3-2 win against Syracuse in Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Friday.

Syracuse was penalized for too many men on the ice with 29 seconds remaining.

Game 2 of the best-of-7 series is Saturday.

Grand Rapids, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, tied the game 2-2 when Nathan Paetsch scored with 2:48 left in the second period.

Nosek gave Grand Rapids a 1-0 lead 4:56 into the first period before Kevin Lynch scored a shorthanded goal for Syracuse to tie it 1-1 at 9:25.

Joel Vermin gave Syracuse, the affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, a 2-1 lead 54 seconds into the second period.

Jared Coreau made 22 saves for Grand Rapids. Mike McKenna made 33 for Syracuse.
