STL@EDM: Tarasenko drills power-play goal past Talbot

EDMONTON -- Jaden Schwartz had a goal and an assist, and the St. Louis Blues scored three times in the third period to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

Pat Maroon, David Perron and Vladimir Tarasenko scored, and Brayden Schenn had three assists for St. Louis (13-15-4), which went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and scored on one of three power plays. Jake Allen made 22 saves.
"We played a full 60 minutes," Maroon said. "Our PK was our best asset. We shut down a really good power play, and our power play stepped up when we needed it to, and that's what we talked about that we needed. I thought tonight we had the best of both worlds, and the boys did a really good job of playing the full 60 minutes."

Jesse Puljujarvi scored for Edmonton (18-14-3), which lost at home for the first time in seven games. Cam Talbot made 26 saves.
Oilers forward Connor McDavid had his nine-game point streak end.
"We just weren't sharp," McDavid said. "We had a lot of opportunities on the power play and we were 0-for-5. That's just not good enough."
Maroon scored to give the Blues a 2-1 lead on a scramble in front of Talbot at 2:19 of the third period. The goal, awarded after the Situation Room initiated a video review to determine if the puck crossed the goal line, was Maroon's first in 10 games.
"I thought [Robert Thomas] made a great move to take it to the net," Maroon said. "I just saw a lane there and I jammed away and right when I hit it I could tell it went right in and I made sure to tell [referee] Kyle [Rehman] to look at it."

Oilers coach Ken Hitchcock challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld after video review.
"The hockey game, for me, was that we had those three chances just before that," Hitchcock said. "Then they came down the ice and got that one chance, and that was the ball game."
Tarasenko scored a power-play goal from the right face-off circle off a pass from Schenn to give the Blues a 3-1 lead at 11:43. It was Tarasenko's first point in eight games.
Schwartz scored into an empty net at 18:09 of the third period for the 4-1 final.
"I think it was a team effort," Perron said. "When you have the responsibility of playing against McDavid's line you know you have to be sharp. You have to know when he's out there at all times. … We did a good job."
Perron scored from the right face-off circle 8:12 into the first period to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Puljujarvi tied it 1-1 at 7:25 of the second period when he one-timed a pass from Jujhar Khaira for his third goal of the season.
Blues coach Craig Berube challenged for offside, but the goal was upheld after video review.
"They made the right call," Berube said. "The guy would have had to touch the puck while the guy was changing there. We thought he had the one foot on the ice, but he didn't. It was the right call by the linesman."

They said it

"That's a performance that we should expect out of ourselves and our group nightly, keep ourselves up to a high standard. It was a whirlwind couple of days, it was emotional, the guys were fired up and it wasn't a good mood around the room the last couple of days."-- Blues goalie Jake Allen on rebounding after a 7-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Sunday
"When they called it a goal I thought for sure they would call it back. I felt like my pad was pushed in, but [referee] Kyle [Rehman], give him credit, he thought the puck had crossed the line before my pad was pushed and gave me an explanation. It just didn't go our way tonight." -- Oilers goalie Cam Talbot on the Blues' winning goal
