Burrows' competitive edge fueling Canucks

by Derek Jory / NHL.com
VANCOUVER -- Whether it's the regular season or the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Canucks forward Alex Burrows only has one gear.

He's full speed ahead every minute of every shift in every game, and his wildly boisterous play has been a major boost for Vancouver this season.

The fourth-year forward, who signed a four-year contract extension in March, also gives it his all when it comes to getting under the opposition's skin, and he's more than mastered the art of trash talking.

His pesky ways were on full display in Game 1 as he and teammate Ryan Kesler got into it with St. Louis' David Backes to end the first period.

That set the stage for another confrontation between Burrows and Backes in Game 2 where just over a minute in the pair were intensely jawing at each other.

"Every team has some guys who do that," said Burrows, who also scored Vancouver's second goal in a 3-0 win in Game 2 on Friday. "It's maybe a little more during the playoffs. It's just part of the game."

It's all about getting the edge in Burrows' book, so much so that he's been known to research the opposition to help fill his head with the appropriate ammo.

Heading into Scottrade Center in St. Louis for Game 3, Burrows better have some fresh gab to dish out, as he's sure to have a major target on his back.
