BOSTON (AP) -The Bruins hired Jim Benning as assistant general manager and Don Sweeney as director of hockey operations and player development Saturday.
Benning takes over for Jeff Gorton, who was fired June 27 after Boston missed the playoffs for a second straight year. The Bruins recently fired first-year coach Dave Lewis and replaced him with Claude Julien.
Benning served as director of player personnel last season, his first with the Bruins. He previously spent 12 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, including the final eight as director of amateur scouting.
"His expertise in player evaluation and his knowledge of the league-wide landscape will be extremely valuable to the organization," Bruins general Manager Peter Chiarelli said Saturday.
Sweeney - who played 15 years with Boston and one with the Dallas Stars before retiring following the 2003-04 season - was promoted from director of player development.
"In one year, Don has shown great hockey aptitude and has been instrumental in moving forward our development plans for our young players," Chiarelli said.
Sweeney is one of four Bruins to play more than 1,000 games. He ranks third on the team's career games list.
