General Manager Peter Chiarelli said Saturday that defenseman Andrew Ference
underwent successful right hernia repair surgery and goaltender Tim Thomas
had successful surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.
Chiarelli also announced that forward Vladimir Sobotka
will undergo a left shoulder stabilization procedure on Tuesday.
Ference’s surgery was performed by Dr. David Berger at Mass General Hospital, and his expected recovery time is two months. Thomas’ surgery was performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York; the Bruins said his expected recovery time is three to four months.
Ference missed 31 regular-season games due to the injury but played in all 13 of Boston's playoff games. Thomas, the Vezina Trophy winner in 2008-09, played in 32 regular-season games but saw no action during the playoffs as the Bruins used rookie Tuukka Rask
. Sobotka played 61 regular-season games and all 13 in the playoffs.
Sobotka’s procedure will be performed by Dr. Peter Asnis and Dr. Thomas Holovacs at Mass General; the team said more information on his recovery time will be available after the procedure is done.
