OTTAWA -- Tuukka Rask's NHL-leading fourth shutout of the season Friday in the Boston Bruins' 5-0 win against the Ottawa Senators may have postponed Niklas Svedberg's first NHL start.
Now, an injury to defenseman Dennis Seidenberg definitely has.
Boston coach Claude Julien said he had made up his mind which goaltender would start the second game of the back-to-back set against Ottawa, but he was keeping that decision to himself.
Rask, Svedberg and backup Chad Johnson were all on the ice Saturday for the Bruins' optional skate at Canadian Tire Centre. However, Svedberg was sent back to Providence of the American Hockey League on Saturday afternoon when it was necessary for the Bruins to recall defenseman Zach Trotman to replace Seidenberg, who will be out for the season with a knee injury sustained Friday.
Svedberg was called up from Providence on Friday and dressed as Rask's backup at TD Garden. Rask was the first goalie off the ice Saturday morning.
"We want to get a look at [Svedberg] but the other guy's coming off a shutout too, so it's always a tough decision to make," Julien said before Trotman was recalled. "I've made that decision, but I'm just not willing to tell you about it."
Forward Carl Soderberg did not travel with the Bruins to Ottawa after he also sustained an injury against the Senators on Friday.
Boston recalled right wing Nick Johnson and defenseman David Warsofsky from Providence before adding Trotman.
Craig Anderson will start in goal for Ottawa, which is 0-5-2 in the second of back-to-back games this season.
Senators coach Paul MacLean said defenseman Chris Phillips will be a game-time decision. Patrick Wiercioch will draw into the lineup if Phillips is unable to play.
