CRANBROOK, B.C. - Joel Broda scored his second goal of the season in the second period and goaltender Michael Snider stopped 39 shots as the Calgary Hitmen edged the Kootenay Ice 2-1 to improve to 5-0 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.

Chase Schaber opened the scoring for the Hitmen (5-0-0-0) nine minutes into the first period by wiring his second of the season past a screened Nathan Lieuwen.

Broda, fresh off a pre-season tryout with the NHL's Washington Capitals, put the Hitmen up 2-0 with a shot from the slot after a wide-open pass from Brandon Kozun.

Kootenay (2-3-0-0) finally solved Snider with less than four minutes remaining in the game when Petr Senkerik scored his first career WHL goal from the point with the Ice on the power play.

Lieuwen was solid in net for the Ice, making 31 saves.
