Brandon MacLean scores shootout winner as Greyhounds edge Whalers @NHLdotcom

PLYMOUTH , Mich. - Brandon MacLean scored the shootout winner as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds edged the Plymouth Whalers 2-1 in Ontario Hockey League action.

MacLean's goal in the fifth round of the shootout was the winner for the Greyhounds (38-15-2-4).

Matt Caria also scored in the shootout for West Division-leading Sault Ste. Marie. Ryan Hayes scored Plymouth's lone shootout marker.

Vern Cooper broke the scoreless tie for the Whalers (32-22-2-3) at 10:18 of the third period with his third goal in two games, only to see Michael Fine tie it 63 seconds later for Sault Ste. Marie.

Matthew Lyall was awarded a penalty shot 13 minutes into the second period, but could not convert for the Greyhounds. Plymouth had just two shots on Gajewski in the period, while Smith steered aside 17 at the other end for the Whalers.

Smith finished with 46 saves for the Whalers and Gajewski made 35 for the Greyhounds.
